Domaine Clarendon Grenache

The Domaine Clarendon Grenache is made from declassified Grenache fruit from Clarendon Hills’ three single site, old bush vine Grenache vineyards; all located in Blewitt Springs. The extremely high standard for all Clarendon Hills wines dictates and administers a grading and selection process for all arriving Grenache fruit. All top quality parts go towards the Clarendon Hills single vineyard expressions while everything else goes into the Domaine Clarendon Grenache. High calibre ingredients combine to yield a regional expression of first class Blewitt Springs Grenache.

Domaine Clarendon BDX

Introduced for the first time in 2016 the Domaine Clarendon BDX represents the combination of estate owned Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot sites. Its constitution is unique every year and always reflects the very best performing variety in that vintage. The wine is carefully extracted to avoid producing a style that has too long term event horizon. The Domaine Clarendon BDX is highly enjoyable when its young and soft and buoyant and doesnt rely on cellaring for 10 years before opening however will do so if required.

Domaine Clarendon Syrah

Domaine Clarendon began as project that involved buying land with a vision to plant and cultivate a very special vineyard. The winemaker design is completely unique in Australia and had never been done before. On a hilltop in Clarendon at 350 mtrs above sea level, Astralis vineyard cuttings were drilled into some the worlds oldest geology and a single stake, non cordon trellis vineyard was created. It took 3 year however in 2005 the vineyard was completed and the first vintage was 2009. Today the vines are approaching 20 years old and in spite of their age there is something utterly remarkable about this wine. The pursuit of perfection is well and truly alive here.

Domaine Clarendon Evolution

The first release of the Domaine Clarendon Syrah was 2009 vintage and it sold out immediately. The project became so successful Clarendon Hills evolved the concept to expand the range of offerings and position all Domaine Clarendon brands to become by the glass introductions to the Clarendon Hills brand. Domaine Clarendon Grenache was first introduced in 2015 and then Domaine Clarendon ‘BDX’ a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot blend introduced in 2016. The 3 unique Domaine Clarendon wines all feature below the AUD$50 retail price point and the collection of wines is essentially designed to be poured by the glass in restaurants around the world. The wines always offer tremendous appeal given their relative complexity and sophistication at vastly approachable, everyday prices.

Clarendon Hills Onkaparinga Vineyard

Domaine Clarendon

Welcome to the Clarendon Hills estate owned vineyards located in the Clarendon and Blewitt Springs sub districts of McLaren Vale

Onkaparinga Vineyard Syrah

The Onkaparinga Syrah produces one of the most prolific Syrah expressions in the Clarendon Hills cellar every vintage. The vineyard used to be considered a Penfolds Grange constituent site in the 1980’s and the pedigree is clearly evident. Deeply layered and recessed, laying in wait for future generations is a story of ancient Blewitt Springs terroir. The site sits atop of the famous Blewitt Springs deep sandy soils and is located in rocky ironstone, shale and quartz pebbles and when coupled with very old, dry grown, pre-phylloxera Syrah vines, they forge an expression of first-class Australian terroir that rivals the best in the world.

Onkaparinga Vineyard Grenache

The Onkaparinga Grenache is only made in the best years. The site yields an intoxicating highly alluring expression that has a deft touch and resembles an iron fist in a velvet glove analogy. The small bunches yielded by the vines up here in high-altitude Blewitt Springs possess phenomenal power and a wealth of complexity and highlight some of the very finest terroirs in Australia.

Sandown Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

The ethereal Sandown Cabernet Sauvignon site is planted to Reynella clone pre-phylloxera vines and exhibits a classic style where a masterful polish is clearly evident. Deeply flavoured and pure cassis fruit profile meets lead pencil, sage and bay leaf across mineral charcoal and slate woven throughout deftly handled extract only the world’s finest barrels are capable of producing.  The power and majesty are seamlessly controlled in this highly restrained yet amazingly approachable, plush tannins. The single vineyard was planted in the 1930’s and is home to some of the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines in McLaren Vale. The Sandown Cabernet is our flagship Cabernet and has been continuously made since 1998.

Sandown Vineyard Syrah

The Old Vine Syrah patch was planted in the 1930’s and is on a slope of the property with a westerly aspect. These old gnarly vines are planted in heavily decomposed ironstone and quartz. The style of wine is completely individual and the winemaking team always comment on how light the style is and how exotic the spices are in this vineyard. The spices come across like incense mixed with deeply aromatic and smoky lapsang oolong tea. Exotic characters such as sandalwood, cocoa powder, sarsaparilla and cola elements top the roast meat and flinty, strawberry and cream palette of this wine. The lighter frame on this style is highly attractive and the intoxicating spices combine to create something highly exotic.

Clarendon Hills Romas

Domaine Clarendon

Welcome to the Clarendon Hills estate owned vineyards located in the Clarendon and Blewitt Springs sub districts of McLaren Vale

Clarendon Hills Romas Terroir

The Clarendon Hills Romas Old Vine Grenache patch hails from the oldest and rockiest section of the Blewitt Springs vineyard. With a small parcel planted in 1920 and the majority of the lowermost rows planted in the 1940’s. This selection of the greater single vineyard yields an absolutely magical expression. An extraordinary expression that every year highlights possibly the best terroir in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale and quite possibly the world over.

There is magic in every glass of Romas and the evidence is there in every barrel tasting for each new vintage. The wine is always hand picked with specific rows selected from the start, then wild yeast fermented and macerated for an extended period of approximately 5 weeks. Before being carefully carefully pressed into a matrix of generally mature 3-6 year old barriques for 18 months. Extra patience is required for the herringbone like extract to fully integrate in the winery. The wine on release is wonderfully illuminated and the extract is polished to a point of perfection.

One of the world’s best Old Vine Grenache vineyards

Gnarly old vines planted in the 1940’s produce microscopic yields along with amazing acidity and present an acidity profile similar to that of a white wine. The density of the rocks and soil up in this part of the vineyard defines Romas and warrants its isolation from other parts of the vineyard and position as flagship Grenache expression at Clarendon Hills. The heavy presence of ironstone, quartz and shale rocks limit the size and yields of these vines and the resulting wine reflects the mineral elements.

The expression we receive from this highly concentrated part of the vineyard is utterly hedonistic and offers mineral complexity for the wine collectors and enthusiasts out there. Typically each vintage yields a vivid kaleidoscope of fresh cut roses, Turkish delight, musk, sherbert, blood orange, blueberry, raspberry and kirsch fruit across an effortless powerful palate aloft with silk and ultra-fine talcum like extract. Nuances of crushed rock, flint, graphite, iodine and ferrous like rust take this expression to the next level. Despite the majesty of the tasting note the profile is medium-weighted and mirrors an ‘iron fist in the velvet glove’ analogy. Amazing both right now to drink and also for the next 20 years in the cellar.

Clarendon Hills Astralis

Domaine Clarendon

Welcome to the Clarendon Hills estate owned vineyards located in the Clarendon and Blewitt Springs sub districts of McLaren Vale

Unearthing one of Australia’s greatest single vineyards – Clarendon Hills Astralis

Clarendon Hills Astralis Syrah vineyard was discovered by Roman Bratasiuk in 1990. He didn’t have much in the way of winery resources in those days so he picked the vineyard by hand and stayed up that night crushing the fruit in a bucket with an empty Burgundy bottle. It was grassroots stuff and as rustic as you could imagine. But the wines were excellent and he sold out year on year and created a little winery that made small amounts of single vineyard expressions from very special old vine patches throughout Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. Across the first vintages 1990 to 1993 the wine was titled ‘Clarendon Hills Shiraz’ however in 1994 the wine was rebranded to Clarendon Hills Astralis Shiraz off the back of his belief this wine was out of this world. Astralis 1994 was in fact Australia’s first $100 bottle of wine and it was adorned in a black 360 ˚ label peppered with golden stars to emphasise the definition of Astralis “pertaining to the stars'”. It was a thing of beauty.

Over the years Roman kept listening to and learning from the vineyard and kept pushing further and further his ambition and understanding of the terroir. Amazingly he is 33 vintages in to this mission and he still believes he hasn’t made his best wine yet. Modern times have seen International accolades rain in from around the world. 2 vintages of Astralis features in the Top 1000 Wine of All Time 1727-2000, a review conducted by 11 European MW’s. Astralis has also featured 2 perfect 100 point scores and 11 other near perfect scores ie 98 or 99 scores in the last 20 years according to the worlds most prominent wine critic, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Leading Australian wine merchant Langtons also classifies Astralis within its highest echelon ‘Exceptional’ category. Astralis is today a global icon of fine wine.

Pertaining to the stars

Majesty, elegance and seamless power are some of the most enduring comments on the Astralis, who’s name comes from a reference to the night sky. Astralis is defined as a celestial body and or pertaining to the stars. Prestigious Australian wine company Langtons ranks Astralis amongst its highest echelon, the ‘Exceptional’ category alongside the iconic Grange and Hill of Grace wines. Clarendon Hills Astralis Syrah stands at the forefront of the contemporary ultra-fine wine movement. A superb vineyard, meticulous winemaking and personal expression all combine to create something out of the ordinary. Seemingly through sheer force of will, Roman Bratasiuk, a complex, visionary character, has shown a way forward for hundreds of hopeful, contemporary winemakers. Inspired by the classic South Australian wines of the 1950s and 1960s, particularly those of Penfolds, Bratasiuk, a former biochemist, bought the old Elysium winery at Blewitt Springs, near Clarendon in McLaren Vale.

By chance, he found the nearby four-hectare Astralis Vineyard was a source of Shiraz ‘as good as you can get’. The vines were originally planted in 1920 with 19th century colonial vine-stock derived from Chateau Reynella. The dry-grown, low-yielding and elevated vineyard, on a 45-degree slope, faces due east and has pebble-ridden clay topsoils over pure ironstone. The site was once trellised, but now these old vines are ‘farmed as they grow, without trellising’.

The winemaking is laissez-faire, seeking through minimum handling to preserve the intrinsic value of the vineyard’s personality. Vinification takes place in open, stainless-steel fermenters of varying size. Typically the wine will macerate on skins, post-ferment, for 14 to 16 days. It is then matured in new, 228-litre, ‘Burgundian’ pièces from Cadus for 18 months. The oak underpins the fruit, giving ‘fragrance, finesse and integration’. Astralis Syrah aims to reflect the winemaker’s idea of ‘varietal expressionism’, a non-interventionist philosophy that embraces ‘organic beauty’ and the natural character of the vintage. Bratasiuk wants to achieve ‘freshness, texture – and a style that my palate likes’.

The lyrical and beautiful Clarendon Hills Astralis Syrah is a highly complex and concentrated wine with dark licorice, blackberry, mocha aromas and chamomile, earthy, bitumen, herb-garden notes. It offers a kaleidoscope of aromas and flavours with dry, slinky tannins, plenty of fruit richness and underlying savoury oak. With age the wine develops panforte, dark chocolate, cedar, spicy aromas and superb, chocolaty textures. It is generally more muscular than typical McLaren Vale Shiraz and has compelling buoyancy, energy and length of flavour.
